The Most Watched Shows on Netflix

During quarantine, people have all been bored and lazy. From not wanting to get up to get ready for school, or not wanting to do anything at all, and just relax. This caused streaming services to grow and expand their services, and also for them to become more popular. The streaming service “Netflix” being one of them. Before quarantine, Netflix was still popular, having been around since 1997, Netflix is pretty old, and has gone through many phases. Netflix was created by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph, as well as their team. Netflix started small, and became very large over time. It was also founded here, in California.

Lilyhammer, a Norwegian-American show, was the first Netflix original series. It had a record audience of 998,000 viewers (1/5 of Norway’s entire population) when it premiered. This just shows how quickly Netflix grew, to become one of the most popular streaming services. Netflix has over 76,000 categories, some of them being unneeded and odd, like ,“Cool Moustaches,” “Dark Canadian Thrillers” and “Understated Detective TV Shows. There are over 3,000 movies and 1,000 shows on netflix. A lot of Netflix’s shows are limited time, and weren’t around for long. But other shows, like Orange is the New Black, and House of Cards are still on Netflix.

Moving on from all the facts, it’s time to get onto Netflix’s most popular shows. Netflix themselves has a “top 10” for the top 10 most popular shows. But that’s current, and it’s not enough information to tell what’s the most popular or best shows on Netflix overall. According to the site, the 10 best tv shows to watch on Netflix are: Stranger Things, Black Mirror, The Crown, The Walking Dead, Daredevil, 13 Reasons Why, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Shameless, Arrow, and Better Call Saul. It seems like a lot of the popular shows on Netflix are the original series, like Stranger Things or Black Mirror. That makes sense, since Netflix is a very large corporation, and I’m sure the people that work there have seen a lot of movies and shows, so they could make a good one. But I also noticed that the Marvel original shows that were on cable television before coming to Netflix. I could  understand why these shows are popular, because people might not have cable, and wanted to watch those shows, then saw they were on Netflix. But there’s so many websites, and so many people saying different things about different shows, so it’s hard to tell. It’s really hard to find out what people like or dislike because there’s people saying that this show’s good, and others are saying it’s bad, it’s a lot to go off of.

I decided to lower my list from “most popular overall” to most popular of last year, 2020, because that’s when quarantine affected us the most. And because Netflix has so many shows and movies, I decided to expand my list to the top 25. According to the site, Forbes, the most popular shows on netflix (via 2020) are The Greatest British Baking Show, The Boss Baby, Back in Business, Floor is Lava, Shameless, Emily in Paris, Ratched, Dead to Me, The Crown, 13 Reasons Why, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Space Force, Schitt’s Creek, Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich, All American, Love is Blind, Unsolved Mysteries, Cobra Kai, The Umbrella Academy, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Outer Banks, Ozark,  Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness, The Office, The Queen’s Gambit, and Cocomelon. These are listed from 25-1. I think that it depends on what you like watching, not what’s most popular, or interesting. According to this list, there are like 10 categories, with all popular shows. I think I may have changed my mind on “most popular shows” and to just leave it to the people, to see what they like, I see now that it’s not “most popular” anymore, it’s what different people like to watch, and you can’t really judge or tell someone to watch something, they can watch what they want to, it’s their choice to make.
