It was March 13, 2020, a regular day for most until the announcement was made. The world was declared in a pandemic status, starring the one and only, Coronavirus. This deadly virus, also known as COVID-19, caused the world to go into complete shut-down for over a year, changing the course of life for many average citizens all over the world. It created time and room for self improvement in people, but at the same time, space for self-destruction.
Still facing the effects of Covid, the world has finally begun to have successful explorations of the coronavirus vaccine, enabling the safety of their people from the virus. Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean that we will be emerging from this pandemic into a continuation of the world we left behind. Instead, we will be entering a new era where mental illness is common, and physical fitness is a sacred form of keeping good health.
Due to being quarantined for 12+ months, it has caused the average human to become attached to their technology whether realizing it or not. From relying on their phones and/or computers for contact/interaction with the people outside their homes to just relaxing on their devices, people spend on average 5-6+ hours a day on tech without even recognizing it. Humanity exercise levels have also decreased rapidly from this outbreak, since people are no longer needed to travel places, making it so that everyone just stays inside, and on their beds or desks.
Technology has become such a huge part of an average human’s life that some find it difficult to imagine life without it, but it would be quite beneficial to. People tend to spend all their free time on devices, mainly their phones for social media, and while this may seem relaxing, it is quite the opposite. Instead of relaxing, they are attaching themselves to an online world where they feel as if they must meet unrealistic standards, discarding their beauty, and wanting more. As if they are a model, they want to look and feel pretty when they already are, ruining their mental health. These actions can lead to eating disorders and depression for they feel as if they need to eat less, or want more of the “perfect” lifestyle. Yes, these actions have always been around, but from coronavirus, these actions have spiked and made these occurrences happen more and more often. According to News Medical Life Sciences, Almandoz says “ The study revealed that nearly 73% of patients experienced increased anxiety and close to 84% had increased depression. Nearly 70% reported more difficulty in achieving weight loss goals, while 48% had less exercise time, and 56% had less intensity in exercise.”
Based on the research from the CDC.gov, stress caused by Coronavirus can lead to Feelings of fear, anger, sadness, worry, numbness, or frustration, changes in appetite, energy, desires, and interests, difficulty concentrating and making decisions, difficulty sleeping or nightmares, physical reactions, such as headaches, body pains, stomach problems, and skin rashes, worsening of chronic health problems, worsening of mental health conditions, increased use of tobacco, alcohol, and other substances.
Physical needs and health have also been neglected and ignored from this pandemic. Since everyone is at home, there is no need to get up and move around or exercise while traveling. Yes, some people have been focusing on their physical health, but most regard it and focus on other needs. The gyms were forced to shut down, disabling an area where people can workout or exercise. Luckily 88% of the gym members around the globe have rejoined their gym when their gyms reopened. Still, the physical health of an average person is decreasing for 3/4 people still feel anxious about their physical health. This can lead to worsening eating disorders and your mental health since you keep putting yourself down. The gym’s reopening can also cause people to over workout, trying to make up for their lost time in quarantine, harming themselves without even realizing it. As well as not being able to do it correctly since they haven’t done it in so long.
According to the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Stockpiling of food increased in nearly half of patients and stress eating was reported in 61%. Now, more than 42% of the Americans adults are obese, which can lead to heart disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes, and certain types of cancer that are some of the leading causes of preventable, premature death. “Unchecked diabetes, hypertension, and other obesity-related comorbidities will create a huge backlog of needs that will come back to haunt us. When you throw in disruptions like social isolation, coupled with losing your job and insurance coverage, a potential disaster is waiting to unfold,” Almandoz said.
Every nation, every race, every ethnic group, every country, every gender, every religion, every political position, and every profession was impacted by these harmful actions of coronavirus. Whether or not infected, this virus had added a toll on everyone’s mental and physical health. Including the newborns and elderly, no one was spared from Covid.
