Call of Duty Warzone, a Battle Royale game, was released with much expectation on March 10, 2020. Everyone who was playing other popular Battle Royale games like Fortnite and Pubg decided to download it and play. For the first few weeks, at least 400,ooo people downloaded and played it each day. Now there are about 80 million people who have downloaded the game in the past 9 months during the COVID-19 pandemic. Because so many people play it each day, friends can play something they enjoy online together.
To get started you need to load into a lobby. Each lobby has around 150 people in it. You can play by yourself or with friends. When you load into the game you start in the pre-game lobby where you fly into a place on the map named Verdansk. After about a minute you get into the real game. The way to win is to eliminate other players and be the last team standing. If you do get eliminated by another team then you have a second chance. When eliminated you are sent to somewhere called the Gulag. At the gulag you are in a one versus one with a random weapon. To get sent back to Verdansk you need to eliminate your opponent.
If you get tired of playing the normal Battle Royale there are many other modes you can play. There is a mode called Plunder. In Plunder your goal is to be the one with the most money at the end of 30 minutes. There are multiple ways to get money–you can either find it on the ground, pick it up from crates, or get it from eliminating opponents. Once someone reaches one million dollars the overtime clock starts to tick. In overtime you earn more money but, there isn’t much time for you to collect the money. After 5 minutes of overtime the game finishes and whoever has the most money wins the game.
During the holidays, Battle Royale released limited time game modes. For example, for Halloween, if a player gets eliminated, s/he is respawn as a zombie who does not have to play in the Gulag. However, if you die as a zombie, then you are sent to the Gulag. As zombie your goal is to pick up to shots. Once you pick up two shots you are spawned back as a human. You can get the shots from eliminating opponents or finding random one on the ground.
Like it or not, this is how 80 million people, mostly teenagers, have been spending their time in quarantine. Make way for the next generation of gamers plundering and respawning in the middle of the night.
