How Gaming has been affected by the Pandemic

Gaming is a favorite activity enjoyed by many. Unfortunately, the pandemic has adversely affected gaming including: canceling some conventions, converting some conventions online, and delaying many titles/games because of Coronavirus.  But not all of the changes to gaming during the pandemic are negative.  For example, game devs are giving out more free items with their games than ever before because of COVID-19, which means a more fun and enjoyable experience for the players.

“Gaming with my family and friends has changed because now we are able to play games more often cause we have nothing to do,” says Kyle Huynh who noticed he has more free time ever since the coronavirus shutdown the world. Before the pandemic, Kyle had very little time to talk and play with his friends before he had to do homework or get out of his room.

Conversely, there are also some downsides. Kyle noticed that he becomes bored quicker because he had nothing to do indoors, which forces him to play games with his friends and/or family to pass the time.  Although the pandemic has changed the amount of time Kyle has to play, his taste in games has never changed.

Many players anticipated titles would be delayed due to the pandemic.  Some of these include the long awaited Cyberpunk 2077, which was released on December, 10, 2020, as well as Dying Light 2.  But video game titles aren’t the only things delayed because of pandemic. Some shipments of new consoles–devices NEEDED to launch games–have been delayed because the lack of resources caused by the pandemic.

Many events related to gaming have been cancelled, too, including some events that many people have been waiting for like E3, Gencon, and PAX West. However, some conventions have decided to move events online, like Blizzcon.  Kyle has a positive idea about this inconvenience. He says, “I am fine with games being delayed because now [manufacturers] have more time to improve their game and make it more enjoyable.”

The gaming community is not the only community that’s been affected by this outbreak. Almost every community in the world has been affected one way or another.
