If you’ve ever heard songs sung in Korean with a sprinkle of English, you might have heard of Bangtan Sonyeondan (or BTS). Who knew something so futuristic would cause a whole generation of listeners to go insane? There are many Korean Pop (or K-Pop) groups that are famous, but there is one specific group that has captured the attention of young people across the globe. BTS’ crazy, insane fans, also known as Adorable Representative MC Youth (or ARMY), fall for the group’s intense dance moves and fashionable looks.

BTS, which stands for “Bangtan Sonyeondan” in Korean or “Bulletproof Boy Scouts” in English, is a group that consists of seven members each with their own roles. RM/Kim Namjoon the leader and main rapper; Suga/Min Yoongi the lead rapper; Jimin/Park Jimin the main dancer and main vocalist; J-Hope/Jung Hoseok the main dancer, rapper, and sub vocalist. Then there is Jin/Kim Seokjin the vocalist and visual, V/Kim Taehyung the lead dancer, vocalist, and visual, and the last member is Jungkook/Jeon Jungkook, the main vocalist, lead dancer, sub rapper, center, and maknae.

At the American Music Awards on November 19th, 2017, BTS performed their song “DNA” from their album Love Yourself: Her, making them the first K-Pop group to perform during a major US music award show. Then, on May 20th, 2018, BTS performed at the Billboard Music Awards and was nominated for the Top Social Artist two years in a row. A few months passed and on August 25th, 2018, BTS started their World Tour: Love Yourself. On September 13th, 2018, they performed “Idol” from their newest album Love Yourself: Answer, on America’s Got Talent.

Eleven days later, BTS went to the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, where RM, the leader of BTS and the most fluent in English, delivered an emotional and powerful speech about self love. Leaders from around the world gather together at the UN to discuss how to maintain international peace, develop friendly relations among nations, create better living standards, and defend human rights. BTS is making a big impression with their innovative music, as well with their courageous leadership.

“I’m really happy for them because they’ve been here since 2013, and it’s nice to see how much they’ve improve because I’ve known them for so long. They’re getting so many awards right now as foreign artists, and they’re the second Korean group/artists to come to America for an award, after PSY. They also recently did a speech at the United Nations, which is really good, considering they are foreigners. Everyone looks up to them as role models and idolize them. I think they will be really successful, but, they have to go through the army as well. I think it will be really cool to hear their new music.” said Hanna Dao, a 7th grade student in AdVenture STEM.

“I think that it’s a really great achievement for them and the K-Pop industry. For instance, breaking Justin Bieber’s streak of winning the Top Social Award and just winning many awards in general has made me really proud of them and I hope they don’t get a lot of backlash for their appearance. They’re achieving a ton of opportunities in America because of their style of their music. For instance, one of their albums, Wings, in 2016, had made a phenomenal breakthrough in the American pop industry too, making them so popular,” said Alaina Tran, a 7th grader at AdVenture STEM.

“I think that they will live up to that name. Their UNICEF campaign, “Love Myself”, was formed to help many people worldwide. Even recently, Namjoon has spoken in the UN assembly, making a breakthrough. Since they are going to be at the military very soon, there will be a pretty long hiatus. Until they come back, we will be starving, but I think that their music will be a different and also nice style,” Alaina Tran stated.

BTS have submitted for 6 Grammy Nominations with their song “Fake Love” and album “Love Yourself: Tear”, for the upcoming Grammy Awards in 2019. Their entries for “Fake Love” is for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop/Duo Group Performance and Best Music Video. Entries for “Love Yourself: Tear” include Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album. BTS has come a long way, with their music, it will be no surprise that they may win a Grammy, in the upcoming 2019 Grammy Awards.

With so many opportunities in America, who knows what they’ll be doing for us in the next 7 years. The fact that they are foreigners from Korea and being able to have so many opportunities in America, makes many people -especially A.R.M.Y- very proud of them. Many people are very excited to see what they hold in store for the next 7 years, with their music, accomplishments, etc. Although they may have to go to the military soon and make us starve till they come back, people will be waiting for the day of their comeback. For the next few years, people hope to follow them along their journey of creating more music and to see them grow as a group and individually.
