Every year, Herman students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher from the first semester, earn a certificate congratulating them on their grades. They also have a ceremony in the gym where the students are presented with this award. This year’s Honors Night was held on February 7th. An award ceremony was held from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm for 5th and 7th graders and from 7:15 pm to 8:15 pm for 6th and 8th graders.

The awards were classified into 3 different categories. There was Honor Roll, which is a 3.0 to 3.4 GPA, Principal’s List which is 3.5 to 3.9 GPA, and Highest Honor which is a 4.0 GPA or higher. Each category of students received their reward separately. First the 5th grade Honor Roll Students received them, then 7th grade Honor Roll, next went 5th grade Principal’s List, then 7th grade Principles List. Same order with Highest Honor, and the 6th and 8th graders.

This was the first Honors Night for Leah Finau since she this is her first year at Herman Intermediate. She has a really big family, and all of them came to see her receive her Highest Honor award. “I was embarrassed because my family was yelling really loud at me.,” says Leah. For the most part Leah knew she was going to get Highest Honors, but she did get a little worried when she received a B+ in one of her classes. Although she was able to bring that grade back up to an A because of all the extra credit she did.

Most people earned Highest Honors in all grades. This is most likely because many students at our school are hard workers. However, if students didn’t earn the best grade possible, they were still acknowledged for their hard work by earning either Principal’s List or Honor Roll.

I like how the article mentions and explains the different aspects of Honors Night, like the GPA needed, and how a student might have felt during the time, good job!
