Immigration has been around for a long time and has been a part of our country for many of years but now some people are trying to get rid of it.

On Friday, January 27, 2018, President Trump signed an executive order that severely restricts immigration from seven Muslim countries and suspends all refugee admission for 120 days. This law has created a fight over the topic of immigration across all fifty states. This law applies only to non-United States citizens. Trump made national security a centerpiece of his election campaign, at one point calling for a “total and complete” ban on all Muslims coming to the U.S.

“Our attitude towards immigration reflects our faith in the American ideal. We have always believed it possible for men and women who start at the bottom to rise as far as the talent and energy allow. Neither race nor place of birth should affect their chances.” Robert F. Kennedy”

— Robert F. Kennedy

Immigrants are all around us in our homes, families, jobs and stores. Immigrants came to our country in search for a better life. Enforcing immigration laws is a complex and hotly-debated topic. Immigrants contribute to their local communities and our nation’s economy. They account for a significant portion of our domestic economic growth.

On Saturday, January 29, 2018, this law impacted individuals who are permanent residents of the U.S. (or green-card holders) who were traveling overseas to visit family or for work. Though a senior administration official said their applications would be considered on a case-by-case basis. The official also said green-card holders from those countries who are in the U.S. will have to meet with a consular officer before leaving the United States.

People may debate the pros and cons of immigration, but one thing is sure. They help our country grow.
