On Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at 4:00 pm, the Leonard Herman Cross Country team went to the Sectional Finals at Christmas Hill Park in Gilroy, California. At this Cross Country meet, every single team competed for points and tried their best to win the Championship.

The previous meet on Thursday, October 5, was the Divisional Championship. During that meet, the top three teams and the top 15 runners in each group were decided. Those were the runners who continued to the Sectional Finals. At the end of the meet, Herman was announced as one of the top three teams. Since Herman placed 3rd, the entire team made it to finals. The other qualifying teams were Valle Christian, Chaboya, Bernal, South Valley, Quimby Oaks, and Solorsano.

One of the runners on the Herman team said, “We probably would’ve done better if no one on the team had walked.” A lot of runners on the team walked at some point during the competition, and if they hadn’t, the team might have placed higher. He also said, “The cross country team did better than I expected.”

The course the runners ran at Sectional Finals was 2.1 miles. First, they ran two laps around softball fields. Second, they ran up a ramp next to the amphitheater and up three big steps into the countryside. Third, they ran through a field of grass, went up a big hill and ran next to the street. Fourth, they ran up the biggest hill of them all. Last but not least, they ran down the hill and onto the straightaway where they sprinted to beat their opponents.

For the last couple of weeks, the cross country team has been working harder than they ever had before. These final practices helped the team a lot. Because of these practices, both C teams got first place in their group. The overall winner of the Sectional Finals was Chaboya Middle School.
