After barely placing in the top three in the last meet, the Herman Cross-Country Team went to Finals. The 7th grade AdVenture STEM runners included Jane Partsch, Mackenzie Macdonald, Elizabeth Felchlin, Izabelle Larson, Nicolas Reed, Logan Perry, Diego Silva, August Pfeilsticker, Arata Ishikawa and others. Ms. St. Lawrence and Ms. Keirns share the responsibility of coaching this high-performing team. After a grueling  2.1 miles, the students won in two categories–C Girls and C Boys–against twenty-four other schools at Christmas Hill Park in Gilroy on Wednesday, October 18, 2017.

After several weeks of vigorous training, multiple 1st and 2nd place wins in two categories, the team qualified to go to Finals. They then won first place for C Girls. Jane Partsch came in 3rd, with Mackenzie Macdonald coming in 6th. For C Boys, Nicolas Reed came in 1st, Logan Perry came in 23rd, and August Pfeilsticker came in 46th. The Herman X-Country Team had previously placed 3rd overall in the last meet after one school got disqualified for bad sportsmanship and interference with the race.

The course consists of two laps through a grass field, then, after running a stretch way, they would reach their first big hill: the steps. The steps are arranged so that along the sides, it is smooth with some grip, so that is where the runners run. After the first hill, the runners go up steps, that lead to the trail behind. From then until they hit the stretch way, it would just be themselves, the other runners, and the dusty trail. This is the place where all the runners would split up and space out; where the faster runners pulled ahead from the rest, to compete the whole of the course for first, with no rest.

Logan Perry, one of the runners who placed, was on the Cross-Country Team last year. Funny enough, one of the coaches  signed him up unbeknownst to him. He hadn’t even thought about the team, much less considered the idea of joining it. He had such a great experience last year that he joined again this year.

Looking back on the meet, the team isn’t certain what place they got. They know they didn’t earn 1st or 2nd place, sadly; however, they did do very well, with lots of improved times. The runners are mostly happy with their achievements and hope that they may be able to do even better next year. The 8th graders said goodbye as this was their last year in middle school.

Great article. A sort of informational statement that feels like it’s a story from a book.
