The hero of this story is Alfred Frankowski, my grandpa. Most grandpas are seen as someone who just lived a average life. But my grandpa, like many others, was in the Vietnam War. My grandpa was in the navy. He didn’t get to handle guns; he was a cook, but he still played an important role. The time he was in Vietnam began  November 1, 1955. He was at sea cooking for the navy.

How he was able to join is by going through some basics and boot camp to teach him what to do and how to handle the equipment and firearm of cannons on the ships. He joined the navy because the United States drafting men to join the army. In a war of this magnitude, he military needed more men to help end the war.

When asked why he joined the navy, he said, “If you didn’t join voluntarily, you would be forced into the army.”

What did you have to do to join the navy. “I had to learn how to use a gun and shoot someone and how to work the tech in cannons.”

What did you do mostly on the ship? “I prepared the meal for the navy that was on the ship.” Were you ever attack while you were on the ship. “No I was not attacked. It was really rare to get attack or invaded.”

I think that this is a great story. No one would think of a cook for the navy as important but they are!
